I don't have a laptop, but I believe some are fitted with infrared ports for connecting with other devices.

Is this true? And are they passive or active ports? I.e. could they be emmitting innocently?

The reason I ask is some people experience electrical devices such as tvs going on and off, and I wonder if there is any infrared coming from something other than their remote which might stray to these devices?

some laptops do have these ports but you have to initiate them they do not run continously and once activated it only runs for a set time to find a connection .
